It probably sounds a little far-fetched to think that having a nicer smile can help you land a coveted job, or can aid you in moving up the corporate ladder if you already have one. However, it may not actually be as far-fetched a notion as you think.
Align Technology, the manufacturers of Invisalign clear aligner braces, has performed research that indicates that people who have nicer smiles may in fact be more likely to get a job than those with less-than-stellar smiles. In addition to the increased likelihood of landing a dream job, those with nicer smiles are also seen by others as being more successful, more popular, wealthier, more social, healthier, and are looked upon as all around happier people.
The results of the research show that the effects of a nicer smile can really have quite an impact on our life. The likelihood is that the positive results that seem to be indicated from the research are a result of people feeling more confident and comfortable with themselves if they know that they have a nice bright smile with well aligned and well cared for teeth and gums that they can show to the world when the corners of their mouth go up.
To back up this notion, the research done by Align shows that 45% of all people responding feel that not having a perfect smile would knock their confidence in the workplace. This would then explain why it might be easier to land a great job or get a promotion if a person has a smile they can feel confident showing. Those with straighter, brighter and nicer-looking teeth generally feel more confident and are more likely to smile. When people smile, it not only shows that they feel better about themselves, but also affects the interactions they have with others.
The research collected by the makers of Invisalign braces indicates that the impact of having nicer teeth may have more of an effect on people than we may realize. For example, one quarter of the people surveyed in Align’s research study reported that they feel held back at work due to their appearance, while a whopping 32% said that they would consider improving their appearance if they knew of a promotion possibility. The study even went as far as showing that about a fifth of all people would be willing to give up their annual vacations if they could instead have great teeth.
So, with all of this research showing that a nicer smile may have a positive effect on landing a job, should you run right out and have your teeth straightened, invest in laser teeth whitening or even splurge for some porcelain veneers? Well, that’s a question only you can answer since each person will have a different feeling about how much the look of their teeth will really impact other aspects of their life.
But if you need a boost to invest a bit of money in your smile, think about the fact that the Align research showed that 57% of people, both male and female, believe that a person’s smile is the most important factor when considering whether to go on a date with someone. In fact, having crooked teeth was seen as a bigger turn off than having wrinkles, according to respondents.
